    Policy Proposal: Reform Social Security

At Grassroot Voices we are fully focused on Small Business policies and regulations that effect the true job creators in our economy. Pursuing those policies sometimes leads us down a side road, and this is one of those times. Our nation is currently facing a debt crisis that is being exacerbated by an entitlement society and the coming Baby Boomer Tsunami of retirement. Therefore, we currently see a need to focus on some of the entitlement programs to help ease the pressure from Congress to raise revenue and further restrict small business growth. Our first policy proposal below won't instantly turn the economy around. However, it is a small bite at the problem that will move us in the correct direction. A Proposal to Revise How the Social Security Administration Administer the Cost-of-Living Adjustment   Summary: The most recent Social Security Trustee Report projects an Old Age Survivors DisabilityInsurance (OASDI) shortfall of $16.1 trillion in ...

    Action Alert!

Don’t let big business make small businesses smaller! The SBA's size standards are used to define what a small business is in every industry. On March 16, 2011 the Small Business Administration issued a proposed rule to change these standards, and the evaluation model indicated that small business size standards should be lowered in 14 industries. Lowering size standards in those 14 industries would cut off nearly 1,200 currently eligible small businesses and many of the jobs in those businesses. Fortunately, in a move counter to their evaluation the Small Business Administration's proposed rule did not to reduce the size standards in these 14 Industries. However, they have requested comments regarding whether or not they should lower the size standards in the 14 industries. From the SBA: SBA requests comments on whether it should lower size standards. SBA has proposed not to reduce small business size standards where applying its ``Size Standards Methodology,'' ...

Congratulating Paul Ryan on His Courageous Budget

Representative Paul Ryan has long been one of the most courageous members on Capitol Hill, and in this Congress he is finally getting the respect that he deserves. Earlier this month Congressman Ryan introduced "Path to Prosperity" a budget that cuts more than $6 Trillion out of the budget (Here). He does this by attacking the entitlement system and providing long term sustainable solutions. Many politicians are afraid of taking on third rail issues, but Ryan takes them on head first and makes them the center of his reforms. He maintains the social safety nets, but makes them more consumer driven, but most importantly he makes sure that they are only truly supporting those in need.   Congressman Ryan's ability to take on third rail politics is not just bravery it is largely that he is one of the smartest people on Capitol Hill. Congressman Ryan has campaigned for several years on ...

    Paul Ryan's Realistic Budget

Earlier this week Representative Paul Ryan (R-WI), chairman of the House Budget Committee, unveiled a sweeping long-term budget proposal which seeks to reduce the size and scope of the federal government in the decades to come.  As expected, there is a whole range of opinions on this proposal, some of which can be viewed here, here, here, and here.  What makes it controversial is that it directly takes on the status quo budgets offered by President Obama, previous presidents, and Congresses. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) forecasts federal government spending, based on President Obama’s latest budget, to rise to 38 percent of GDP by 2040 and 45 percent by 2050.  The President’s budget can’t be sustained.  In order for the federal government to just balance the annual budget in 2040 it would have to triple the amount of taxes collected—as a percent of GDP—that it currently collects.  Rep. Ryan’s budget is projected ...

    Debt, Deficits, and Solutions

Today we attended a basic briefing on the federal debt hosted by the Center for Freedom and Prosperity. The two speakers were Veronique de Rugy from The Mercatus Center and Bill Beach from The Heritage Foundation. Following the trend of economic forecasts that we have been hearing for the past year, their projections were full of doom and gloom. The problem that we see in these projections is that for years "Doom and Gloom" projections have been used to draw idealogical lines in the sand, so we are worried that these won't be taken seriously. We believe that this time these predictions aren't merely tools for the fiscal fight and that the vast number of similar and complimentary predictions needs to be acknowledged and politically debated. Veronique de Rugy is a senior research fellow at the Mercatus Center. She was previously a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, a policy ...

Doctor’s Take to the Hill and Fight for Their Patients

Two Doctors and Congressman Burgess took to the hill recently to discuss how Obamacare is going to effect the patient-physician relationship. As troubling as Obamacare is to small businesses, one of the saddest points of the bill is that hurts patients.
